Like many couples, my wife and I have different sleep preferences. She wants something just slightly stiffer than a waterbed, and I want something just slightly softer than a piece of plywood. When we first moved in together, she was winning since she had stuff like an adult bed, and I couldn't convince her that my air mattress should be our primary sleeping situation. But when we moved to Florida, it was time to upgrade from a Queen to a King, and I found a good deal for an online bed, and it was the ideal mattress for me.
My wife managed through this for five years until it was finally time to move on to an adult bed that could suit both of our needs. At first, we looked to save money with another online purchase, but when we got it, it wasn't hard enough for me, and it wasn't soft enough for her. We went back to the old bed and wanted to have the company pick it up, but it had a small makeup smudge on it, and they said that they couldn't take it at that point. I suggested that we put the mattress in the living room, and my wife quickly shot down the idea, because although we had a child, she still wanted to have a grownup house.
About a year later, we decided it was time to step up our sleeping situation and get a SleepNumber bed. I think it's been just as good for me, and it's been a big upgrade for her. Usually, SleepNumber will take your old bed and recycle it for you, but with Covid-19 going on, they are not currently performing that service. I looked into it, and it turns out that we can get it picked up by the city with an appointment, but my wife agreed to just let me put it in our living room just in case this bed is also a bust. It helped that we really haven't used our living room much since the little guy got here since the nursery is right next to it. We have other places where we can relax, so even though he could almost definitely sleep through the sound of a television, we figured there was no need to press our luck.
As I mentioned, the bed has not been a bust, but the king-sized mattress in the living room has been THE FREAKING BEST. We put it right in front of the couch, and it takes up nearly our entire living room floor. It is hilarious, but it is also so much fun. At first, our son would just sprint off the couch and face plant onto the nice cushy bed below. It has evolved into us doing all sorts of wrestling moves to each other on the bed while being able to jump from the "top rope" (couch) to perform all sorts of acrobatic feats. He giggles; I giggle; even my wife giggles as this thing is universally loved.
I’ll admit when we first brought this thing out, my son was slightly hesitant. He wasn’t sure of this mattress’s capabilities, but he soon discovered how much fun this could be. This first game never goes out of style.
He’s been doing this for months, and it’s only expanded as he’s now willing to leap off the couch into a faceplant onto the mattress.
This mattress has taught my son self-reliance. Here, I squash him like a pancake with a big splash.
Instead of giving up, he uses “Toddler Strength” to throw me off like the piece of human trash that I am.
Okay, and since I am still a child at heart, it’s pretty damn fun for me too.
Flip out for milk, and definitely get yourself a mattress for the living room. It ensures the good times don't stop.
